Initial Style Pruning

Once the front and the style of the trunk is determined, an initial pruning can be done to remove faulty branches and branches in the lower trunk, keeping about one-third of all branches, mostly toward the apex. When necessary, leave one or two minor branches on the lower trunk (fig. 96).

Decisions about further trimming of the apex should be made carefully, in keeping with the overall layout, retaining only branches that are deemed absolutely necessary in their original lengths to be wired later and to grow to the desired thickness. For pines and junipers, a few suitably placed thick branches may be kept, with their bark removed for creating driftwood-style branches.

Branches on the lower middle part of the trunk can sometimes be retained to allow thickening of the trunk, and then wired as later options for deadwood branches.
